On Saturday, Oct 23, 2021, the UZH Alumni Shanghai Chapter embarked on an exploration of a charming Shanghai neighborhood, located in the Hongkou District. Under the lead of Jeff Juran, the Chapter went on a discovery journey, following the traces left by the more than 20,000 Jewish refugees who lived in the area during the 1930s and '40s, after fleeing Europe to escape the Holocaust. During the stroll, Jeff introduced the Chapter to several buildings used by Jewish organizations and houses inhabited by known individuals back in those days, bringing history back to life through anecdotes, letters, and photos. The walking tour and the subsequent visit of the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum allowed the participants to travel back in time and to dive into an outstanding and surprising episode of Shanghai's history.
